Alex Perry "The Suffering of Somalia"。

Al-Shabaab (Arabic for Youth) now controls much of the south of the country, in the manner of the Taliban: on Oct.27, 1,000 spectators gathered at a sports stadium in the port of Kismayo to watch al-Shabaab stone to death a 13-year-old girl, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow. Amnisty International says al-Shabaab arrested her and convicted her of adultery after she complained she had been gang-raped. (p.37 TIME EU version, November 24, 2008.)

Reuters

The 23-year-old woman was placed in a hole up to her neck for the execution late on Monday in front of hundreds of people in a square of the southern port of Kismayu, which the Islamist insurgents captured in August.

Stones were hurled at her head, and she was brought out of the hole three times to see if she had died.

When a relative and others surged forward, guards opened fire, killing a child, the witnesses said.

Initial local media reports said Duhulow was 23, but her father told Amnesty International she was 13. Some of the Somali journalists who first reported the killing later told Amnesty International that they had reported she was 23 based upon her physical appearance.

Perhaps only in Somalia could the prospect of more war be a sign of hope. (p.37)
